Schuylkill Valley and Hamburg made a good showing at the District 3-AA Section 2 Wrestling Tournament held Saturday, Feb. 16 in Hamburg. Schuylkill Valley took second place in the team standings with 157 points, while Hamburg was third with 132.5 team points. Wyomissing won the team competition with 170 points. Tulpehocken finished in 13th place.
The Panthers had three sectional champions, two silver medalists, a pair of third place finishers and nine qualifiers for this weekend’s District 3 Championships in Hershey.
Hamburg had four silver medalists, three third place finishers and one sixth place finishers. Since the top six advance on, the Hawks will have eight wrestlers in the district tournament.
Winning gold medals for the Panthers were Josh Giorgio (120), Dante Giorgio (220) and Trevor Crupi (285). Tanner White (126) and Jonathan Tindall (195) each finished in third place while Mason Shuman (113) was fifth. Kyle Dimovitz (132), Elijah Zimmerman (138) and Colby Geisinger (152) all finished in sixth to qualify for districts.
Josh Giorgio began his tournament with a 45 second pin of Kody Kreiser of Northern Lebanon in the quarterfinals. He then pinned John Lobeck of Lancaster Catholic in 1:15 of his semifinal bout, then earned an 8-2 decision in the championship bout over Terrence White of Bishop McDevitt.
Dante Giorgio needed just 34 seconds to pin Alexander Lapp of Tulpehocken in the quarterfinals, then pinned Matt Vines of Northern Lebanon in 1:39 of his semifinal bout.
In the championship bout, Giorgio earned a 4-3 decision over Columbia’s Vanyel Leytham-Peterson. The match was tied after three overtime periods which sent the bout to the ultimate tiebreaker round when Giorgio pulled out the victory.
Crupi pinned Myles Webb of Bishop McDevitt in 1:28 in the first round, then earned a 6-3 victory over Ben Wertz of Wyomissing in the semifinals. In the championship bout, Crupiu earned a 3-2 decision victory over Nick Reber of Hamburg.
For Hamburg, Chris Kummerer (132), Nick Oswald (132), Austin Bashore (195) and Nick Reber (285) all finished in second place, while Mark Kramer (160), Cody Miller (170) and Luke Kamp (220) all finished in third place.
Dylan Miller (126) will head to the district tournament after taking fifth place.
Kummerer began his tournament with a pin of Kyle Dimovitz of Schuylkill Valley at the 3:22 mark of their quarterfinal round bout. He then won a 6-2 decision over Dan Schmeck of Brandywine Heights in the semifinals before losing in the championship bout to Jeffrey Inman of Annville-Cleona, 2-1.
Oswald opened his tournament with a pin in 3:36 over Elijah Zimmerman of Schuylkill Valley in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Oswald pinned Joey Emborsky of Northern Lebanon in 2:54. But in the finals, he lost a 4-1 decision to Gavin Arredondo of Wyomissing.
Bashore pinned Schuylkill Valley’s Tindall in 3:44 of their quarterfinal bout. The Bashore pinned Evan Schnader of Lancaster Catholic at 5:54 of their semifinal round bout. In the championship bout, Bashore lost a 2-1 decision to Josh Naylor of Wyomissing.
Reber pinned Wes Bankus of Exeter in 3:43 of the quarterfinals, then earned a 4-2 overtime win over Andres Munoz of Columbia in the semifinals. In the championship bout, he lost a 3-2 decision to Schuylkill Valley’s Crupi.
