Hamburg
Boys’ Basketball
The Hamburg High School boys’ basketball team dropped two more games last week and are 0-9 in the Berks League and 3-18 overall. The Hawks have one game remaining on their schedule.
On Jan. 29, the Hawks played host to an undefeated Berks Catholic team. The Saints scored 46 first half points and went on to defeat Hamburg, 70-23.
The Saints took control of the game early with a 24-2 lead after one quarter. By halftime, the lead was up to 37 points, 46-9.
Josh Kisha had seven points to lead the Hamburg offense. Justin Barr, Eric Peacock and Dan Preston all had four points.
On Feb. 1, Hamburg played host to Conrad Weiser. The Scouts, who came into the game with just one league loss, outscored the Hawks in all four quarters and won the game, 58-41.
The Scouts jumped out to a 15-9 lead after one quarter, then increased the lead to 13 by halftime, 31-18. The Hawks were unable to make a second half comeback.
Patrick Barter led the Hawks with 14 points, while Kisha scored 11 and Preston netted five.
Girls’ Basketball
The Hamburg High School girls’ basketball team dropped two of three games last week and are 4-5 in the Berks League and 13-8 overall with one game remaining on the schedule.
On Jan. 29 the Lady Hawks hit the road to take on Berks Catholic. The Saints got off to a great start which helped them to a 60-35 victory over Hamburg.
Berks Catholic took a commanding 20-6 lead into the second quarter, then increased the lead to 23 points by halftime, 36-13. Hamburg cut the lead to 17 after three quarters, but were unable to come all the way back.
Tara Klee led the Hamburg offense with nine points in the contest. Kassidy Lesher netted eight points while Brianna Richards scored seven and Alisha Groff had six.
On Jan. 30, the Lady Hawks played host to Twin Valley. Hamburg used a strong third quarter to defeat the Raiders, 55-27.
Hamburg held a 20-16 lead at halftime, but took control of the game in the third quarter when they outscored Twin Valley, 22-3.
Kassidy Lesher was the top scorer for Hamburg with 13 points. Klee netted 11 points and Sydney Lesher scored seven.
On Jan. 31, the Hawks traveled to Conrad Weiser for another Berks League game. The Lady Hawks and Scouts battled through a close game, but it was Weiser that came out on top, 51-43.
The Scouts led after one quarter, 14-12. They upped the lead to 10 by halftime, 28-18. Hamburg was unable to mount a second half comeback.
Kassidy Lesher was the high scorer for Hamburg with 15 points. Klee netted 13 points while Sydney Lesher added nine.
Wrestlng
The Hamburg High School wrestling team qualified for the District 3-AA Tournament and opened against Biglerville in Jan. 30. Unfortunately the Hawks were eliminated in that first round contest, 60-21.
Cody Miller earned a pin for the Hawks, pinning his opponent in 2:46.
Nick Oswald (145) and Chris Kummerer (132) both won by forfeits for Hamburg, while Nick Reber (220) won by a 4-1 decision.
Boys’ Bowling
The Hamburg High School boys’ bowling team won a pair of matches last week and are now 21-12 in the Berks League, tied for third place with Oley Valley. Hamburg’s final match of the season will be at first place Conrad Weiser, which will come into the match with a record of 31-2.
Oley Valley’s final match of the season will be against second place Schuylkill Valley (25-8). Both matches took place on Tuesday, Feb. 5. Due to our press deadline, we are unable to report the results of the two matches.
On Jan. 29, Hamburg shutout Wyomissing, 3-0. Justin Mengel led the way for the Hawks with a three-game series of 603. Nate Foster bowled a 503 for Hamburg.
Hamburg also won the junior varsity match, 2-1.
On Jan. 31, Hamburg defeated Reading, 2-1. Mengel led the way once again for Hamburg with a series of 562. Colin Geschwindt bowled a 541.
Girls’ Bowling
The Hamburg High School girls’ bowling team split a pair of matches last week and are now 27-6 in the Berks League and alone in second place with one match to go on the schedule.
Hamburg is two games ahead of third place Oley Valley (25-8). The Lady Hawks ended the regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 5 with a match against last place Conrad Weiser (2-31). Hamburg needed only to win two of the three games against the Lady Scouts to clinch second place. Due to our press deadline, we were unable to report the results of the match.
On Jan. 29, the Lady Hawks blanked Wyomissing, 3-0. Brooke Reed led the way for Hamburg with a three-game series of 570. Courtney Stewart rolled a 506 series and Rachel SzaFranski bowled a 488.
On Jan. 31, Reading defeated Hamburg, 3-0 when Hamburg did not have enough bowlers to field a team.
Schuylkill Valley
Boys’ Basketball
The Schuylkill Valley High School boys’ basketball team won two of three games last week and are now 3-5 in the Berks League and 9-12 overall. The Panthers played their final game of the league season against Hamburg on Tuesday, Feb. 5. Due to our press deadline, we are unable to report the results of the contest.
The Panthers began the week with a home game against Twin Valley on Jan. 29. The game was close throughout, but Schuylkill Valley came out on top, 49-40.
The Panthers held an 18-16 halftime lead, then extended the advantage to five after three quarters, 33-28. They put the game away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Raiders, 16-12.
Jon Maulick was the high scorer for Schuylkill Valley with 19 points in the contest. Kyle Beissel netted 12 while Jared Chelius added 11 (including three three-point buckets). Christian Feliciano scored five points.
On Jan. 30, the Panthers hit the road to take on non-league opponent Southern Lehigh. The game went down to the wire but Southern Lehigh pulled out the victory, 59-57.
Schuylkill Valley held a 36-26 halftime lead, but Southern Lehigh fought back in the third quarter, outscoring the Panthers, 23-9.
Beissel led the way for the Panthers with 17 points while Chelius scored 14 points and Maulick had 11.
On Feb. 1, Schuylkill Valley traveled to Fleetwood to take on the Tigers. The game needed an extra period but Schuylkill Valley 12 points in that extra period to defeat the Tigers, 74-70.
Fleetwood outscored the Panthers in the third quarter, 22-11 to take a 46-40 lead. But Schuylkill Valley fought back in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.
Beissel led the way for the Panthers with 23 points in the contest, with Chelius right behind him with 22 points. Evan Hargrave chipped in with 17 points and Feliciano had eight points.
Girls’ Basketball
The Schuylkill Valley High School girls’ basketball team lost two of three games last week and are 1-8 in the league and 3-18 overall. The Lady Panthers took on Hamburg on Feb. 5 in the final league game of the season. Due to our press deadline, we are unable to report the result of that game.
The Lady Panthers began the week Feb. 5 with a league game against Twin Valley. Schuylkill Valley outscored the Raiders in all four quarters to earn its first league win of the season, 45-24.
The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 14-10 lead after one quarter, then expanded the lead to 13 by halftime, 31-17. They pretty much put the game away in the third quarter by outscoring the Raiders, 12-7.
Emily Hepner paced the Schuylkill Valley offense with 19 points in the contest. Abby Boyer was right behind her with 18 points.
On Jan. 31, the Lady Panthers were back home to host Fleetwood. The Tigers used a strong start to defeat Schuylkill Valley, 48-35.
Fleetwood took an 11-2 lead into the second quarter, then upped the advantage to 18 by halftime, 27-9. The Panthers were unable to muster up a second half comeback.
Hepner led the way once again for Schuylkill Valley with 14 points. Madison Zimmerman netted nine and Boyer scored seven.
On Feb. 2, the Lady Panthers were back on the road to take on non-league opponent Garden Spot. The game went down to the wire but Garden Spot was able to pull out the victory, 37-36.
Hepner was high scorer for the Panthers with 12 points. Lauren McEwen scored six while Boyer, Marissa McEwen and Zimmerman all had four points.
Wrestling
The Schuylkill Valley High School wrestling team was victorious in its quarterfinal round bout in the District 3-AA Tournament, but was eliminated in the semifinals.
In the quarterfinals, the Panthers topped Northern Lebanon, 49-21.
Winning by pins for Schuylkill Valley were: Josh Giorgio (120), 2:47; Zachary Homan (145), 1:59; cOLBY gEISINGER (160), 3:50; Joey Waack (170), 1:53; Dante Giorgio (220), 1:45; Jacob Horst (106), 1:47.
Winning by decision for the Panthers were: Tanner White (132), 12-5; Johnathan Tindall (195), 1-0; Trevor Crupi (285), 4-0.
On Jan. 30, the Panthers headed to the semifinals where they lost to Boiling Springs, 51-18.
Earning pins for the Panthers were: Joey Waack (170), 0:41; and Jacob Horst (106), 1:26.
Winning by decisions for Schuylkill Valley were: Zach Homan (145), 4-3; and Jacob Horst (106), 1:26.
Boys’ Bowling
The Schuylkill Valley High School boys bowling team won a pair of matches last week and are 25-8 in the Berks League and have clinched second place in Division 2. The Panthers ended the regular season on Feb. 4 when they took on Oley Valley. Due to our press deadline, we are unable to report the results of the match.
On Jan. 29. Schuylkill Valley defeated Antietam, 3-0. Tyler Dautrich led the way for the Panthers with a three-game series of 683. Matt Keller bowled a 617 series and Ed Skorpinski bowled a 539.
On Jan. 31, the Panthers blanked Berks Catholic, 3-0. Keller was high roller with a 678 series. Dautrich bowled a 662 while Brian Biszmaier and Skorpinski each bowled a 627.
Girls’ Bowling
The Schuylkill Valley High School girls’ bowling team clinched first place in Division 2 of the Berks League after winning a pair of matches last week. The Panthers have a record of 31-2 in league play with only one match remaining on the schedule.
Schuylkill Valley began the week with a 3-0 victory over Antietam on Jan. 29. Jamie Wilson bowled a 636 series while Kristen Keller bowled a 595 and Ashlin Long a 553.
On Jan. 31, Schuylkill Valley also shutout Berks Catholic, 3-0. Keller bowled a 638 to lead the way for the Panthers. Long bowled a 563 and Wilson a 530.
Tulpehocken
Boys’ Basketball
The Tulpehocken High School boys’ basketball team split a split a pair of games last week as the Trojans hold a Berks League record of 3-6. They are 8-13 overall.
On Jan. 29, the Trojans played host to Kutztown in a defensive Berks League contest. Tulpehocken came out on top, 38-28.
Tulpehocken led 9-3 after one quarter, then increased the advantage to eight by halftime, 18-10. The Trojans outscored the Cougars in the third quarter, 10-7, and kept the Cougars at bay in the final period.
Robert Ekvall led the way for Tulpehocken with 12 points in the game. Kevin Berry contributed with seven points while Isaiah Bewley netted six and Noah Carles had five.
On Feb. 1, the Trojans were at home against a tough Oley Valley squad. The Lynx got off to a good start and never looked back as they defeated Tulpehocken, 51-34.
The Lynx jumped out to a 14-9 lead after one quarter, and increased the advantage to 15 by halftime, 32-17. They pretty much put the game away in the third quarter by outscoring the Trojans, 12-8.
Carles paced the Tulpehocken offense with 10 points in the game. Ekvall chipped in with eight points and Mellon had six.
Girls’ Basketball
The Tulpehocken High School girls’ basketball team split a pair of Berks League games last week and are now 4-5 in the league and 10-10 overall with one game remaining on the league schedule.
On Jan. 29, the Lady Trojans played host to Kutztown. Thanks to a strong second half, Tulpehocken came away with a 49-34 victory.
The Lady Trojans held a one-point halftime lead, abut outscored the Cougars in the third quarter, 17-9, and the fourth, 13-7, to pull out the victory.
Hannah Zerbe and Brooke Boyer each netted 12 points to lead the Tulpehocken offense. Taylor Boyer and Morgan Firestine each had seven points while Jamie Fisher and Darian Gordan each had five points.
On Jan. 31, the Trojans hit the road to take on first place Oley Valley. A 23-point second quarter help the Lady Lynx defeated Tulpehocken and clinch the division title, 54-25.
Oley Valley jumped out to a 12-7 lead after one quarter, then took command of the game when they outscored their guests in the second quarter, 23-5.
Gordan paced the Tulpehocken offense with nine points in the contest. Firestine netted six pointsn and Taylor Boyer scored five. Lauryn Yoder contributed three points.
