Hamburg
Boys’ basketball
The Hamburg High School boys’ basketball team lost three games last week. The Hawks fell to 0-6 in league play and 2-14 overall.
On Jan. 15, the Hawks played host to Schuylkill Valley. The Panthers used a strong second quarter to defeat the Hawks, 58-50.
Hamburg held a slim 14-13 lead after one quarter, but Schuylkill Valley came back to take a nine-point halftime lead after outscoring the Hawks in the second quarter, 21-11. The lead was up to 13 after three quarters and Hamburg could not recover from the deficit.
Dan Preston led the way for the Hamburg offense with 14 points in the contest. Patrick Barter was right behind him with 13 while Nick Schlottman scored 10 and Harvinder Saggi added six.
On Jan. 18, the Hawks traveled to Fleetwood to take on the Tigers. Fleetwood got off to a great start and ended strong as well as they defeated Hamburg, 62-36.
The Tigers jumped out to a 21-9 lead after one quarter. Hamburg cut the lead to seven by halftime before Fleetwood pulled back away in the second half. The Tigers outscored the Hawks in the third quarter, 15-8, and the fourth, 16-4.
Preston was the top scorer once again for Hamburg with 13 points. Josh Kisha scored 11 and Barter added 10.
On Jan. 19, Hamburg was back at home, this time to take on Antietam. Despite a 24-point fourth quarter, the Hawks were defeated by the Mounts, 55-47.
Antietam jumped out to a 13-9 lead after one quarter, then expanded the lead to 12 by halftime, 28-16. They put the game away in the third quarter when they outscored Hamburg, 14-7.
Barter was the top scorer for Hamburg with 20 points in the contest. Kisha scored 14 and Justin Barr added nine.
Girls’ Basketball
The Hamburg High School girls’ basketball team won two of three games last week. The Lady Hawks are 3-3 in the Berks League and 11-5 overall.
On Jan 15. the Lady Hawks traveled to Leesport to take on Schuylkill Valley. A solid first half helped Hamburg to a 42-29 victory.
Hamburg jumped out to a 11-5 lead after one quarter, then increased the lead to 15 by halftime, 24-9. The Lady Panthers were unable to mount any comeback.
Kassidy Lesher led the Hamburg offense with 13 points in the game. Tara Klee and Sydney Lesher each scored eight points and Brianna Richards scored six.
On Jan. 17, the Hawks played host to Fleetwood in a Berks League contest. Thanks to a strong second quarter, the Lady Tigers defeated Hamburg, 55-39.
The game was tied at 10-10 after one quarter, but Fleetwood outscored Hamburg in the second quarter, 14-2 to take a 24-12 halftime lead.
Richards was the high scorer for Hamburg with 10 points in the game. Hannah Schoenly scored eight points while Klee scored six, Kassidy Lesher and Sydney Lesher each scored five points.
In a non-league game, the Lady Hawks traveled to Northern Lebanon on Jan. 19. Hamburg got contributions from a lot of players as they won the game, 47-39.
Hamburg took a 17-14 lead after one quarter, then increased the lead to nine by halftime, 30-21. Hamburg outscored Northern Lebanon in the third quarter, 10-7, then cruised on in for the victory.
Tara Klee led the way for Hamburg with 11 points. Richards netted nine points while Kassidy and Sydney Lesher each had eight points. Hannah Schoenly scored seven.
Wrestling
The Hamburg High School wrestling team swept a Berks League tri-match with Tulpehocken and Kutztown on Jan. 16 to improve to 5-1 in the league and 12-5 overall.
The Hawks defeated Tulpheocken, 77-3.
Earning pins for the Hawks were: Cody Miller (182), 0:48; Austin Bashore (195), 1:55; Luke Kemp (220), 4:32; Shane Shollenberger (113), 4:45; Mark Kramer (152), 0:12; and Joe Raffensperger (160).
Montay Berger (138), won by a tehnical fall, 16-1 in 2:15 while Nicholas Reber (285), Mike Eicher (106), Jarrdo Bickley (120), Dylna Miller (126), Che Narvaez (145) and Chris Kummermer (132) all won by forfeits.
Hamburg defeated Kutztown, 66-9.
Winning by forfeits for Hamburg were: Raffensperger (160), 2;57; Kurt Mohn (170), 1:08; Cody Miller (182), 1:45; Kemp (220), 3:50; Reber (285), 3:01; Berger (138), 1:22; Narvaez (145), 0:40; and Kramer (152), 0:34.
Winning by decisions for the Hawks were: Mady Madtes (195), 3-2; Mike Madara (120), 9-2; and Dylan Miller (126), 6-2.
Eicher (106) and Kummerer (132) both won by forfeits.
Boys’ Bowling
The Hamburg High School boys’ bowling team split a pair of Berks League matches last week and are 15-9 in the league.
On Jan. 15, the Hawks were defeated by Schuylkill Valley, 2-1. Collin Geschwindt led the way for Hamburg with a three-game series of 670. Nate Foster bowled a 650 for the Hawks.
On Jan. 17, Hamburg shutout Berks Catholic, 3-0. Foster was the high scorer for Hamburg with a series of 605. Justin Mengel bowled a 582 series and Geschwindt bowled a 509.
Berks Catholic won the junior varsity match, 3-0.
Girls’ Bowling
The Hamburg High School girls’ bowling team split a pair of matches last week are are 19-5 in the league and 22-5 overall.
On Jan. 15, Hamburg lost to Schuylkill Valley, 2-1. Samantha Scherer led the way for Hamburg with a three-game series of 574. Brooke Reed bowled a 512 series.
On Jan. 17, Hamburg shutout Berks Catholic, 3-0. Scherer led the way once again for Hamburg with a series of 563. Reed bowled a 542 series and Courtney Stewart bowled a 442.
Schuylkill Valley
Boys’ Basketball
The Schuylkill Valley High School boys’ basketball team won two of three games last week and are now 2-4 in the Berks League and 7-9 overall.
On Tuesday, Jan. 15, the Panthers used a strong second quarter to defeat Hamburg, 58-50.
Hamburg held a slim 14-13 lead after one quarter, but Schuylkill Valley came back to take a nine-point halftime lead after outscoring the Hawks in the second quarter, 21-11. The lead was up to 13 after three quarter and Hamburg could not recover from the deficit.
Kyle Beissel led the Panther offense with 20 points in the contest. Jon Mulick netted 17 and Frank Melvin scored nine.
On Thursday, Jan. 15. The Panthers hit the road to take on Berks Catholic. Schuylkill Valley stayed with the undefeated Saints throughout the first half but Berks Catholic pulled away in the second half and wonthe game, 57-36.
The Saints held a 30-23 lead at halftime, but went on to outscored the Panthers in the third quarter, 13-5, and the fourth, 14-8 to earn the victory.
Beissel led the Schuylkill Valley offense with 12 points in the game. Maulick scored eight while Evan Hargrave and Christian Feliciano each scored six.
On Jan. 19, the Panthers were back at home to battle Brandywine Heights in a non-league contest. A 20-point third quarter helped the Panthers defeat the Bullets, 63-51,
Brandywine Heights held the early 19-13 lead after one quarter. But Schuylkill Valle came back to take the halfime lead, 31-27, then opened things up by outscoring the Bullets in the third quarter, 20-8.
Beissel paced the Schuylkill Valley offense with 25 points, while Hargrave netted 15 and Maulick scored eight.
Girls’ Basketball
The Schuylkill Valley High School girls’ basketball team fell to 0-6 in the Berks League and 1-16 overall after losing three games last week.
On Tuesday, Jan. 15, the Lady Panthers played host to Hamburg. A solid first half helped Hamburg to a 42-29 victory.
Hamburg jumped out to a 11-5 lead after one quarter, then increased the lead to 15 by halftime, 24-9. The Lady Panthers were unable to mount any comeback.
Emily Hepner led the Schuylkill Valley offense with 15 points in the game. Abby Boyer scored seven and Lauren McEwen added four.
On Jan. 17, Schuylkill Valley traveled to Berks Catholic for a league contest. Berks Catholic got off to a good start and never looked back as they downed the Lady Panthers, 55-25.
Berks Catholic jumped out to a 19-5 lead after one quarter, then increased the lead to 27 by halftiem, 35-8. The Panthers could not recover from the deficit.
Hepner was top scorer once again for Schuylkill Valley with 13 points in the game. Lauren McEwen and Kortney McEwen each scored three points.
On Jan. 19, the Lady Panthers played host to Brandywine Heights. The Lady Bullets were able to come away with a 40-35 victory over the Panthers.
Brandywine took a 9-6 lead after one quarter, and led at halftime, 19-16. The game remained close throughout the second half but it was Brandywine that pulled out the victory.
Hepner scored 14 points in the game to lead the Panthers. Kortney and Lauren McEwen each scored six points and Jill Deiley netted four.
Wrestling
The Schuylkill Valley High School wrestling team improved to 4-1 in the Berks League and 14-2 overall after winning two of three matches last week.
On Jan. 16, the Panthers traveled to Brandywine Heights and came home with a 40-28 victory.
Winning by pins for Schuylkill Valley were: Josh Giorgio (120), 0:43; Elijah Zimmerman (138), 3:35; and Colby Geisinger (152), 5:51.
Winning by decisions for the Panthers were: Mason Shuman (113), 6-2; Tanner White (132), 11-3; and Dante Giorgio (220), 4-1.
Trevor Crupi (285) won by a forfeit.
On Jan. 17, the Panthers defeated Oley Valley, 40-30.
Winning by pins for Panthers were: Geisinger (152) 1:28; and Jonathan Tindel (195), 1;15.
Winning by decisions were: Zimmerman (138), 8-6; Zachary Homan (145), 14-6; and Whie (126), 3-1.
Dante Giorgio (220), Crupi (285) and Shuman (113) all won by forfeits.
On Jan. 19, the Panthers were defeated by Wyomissing, 38-28.
Winning by pins for Schuylkill Valley were: Jonah Horst (152), 1:06; Geisinhger (170), 3:32; and Dante Giorgio (220), 1:30.
Horst (106) won by a technical fall, 16-1, as did Shuman (120), 17-1.
Boys’ Swimming
The Schuylkill Valley High School boys’ swimming team fell to 4-1 in the league after losing to Wilson on Jan. 15, 107-79.
Luke Raudenbush and Charlie Pletz were Schuylkill Valley’s lone individual winners in the meet. Raudenbush was first in the 100 breast in a time of 1:02.93, while Pletz won the 100 back in 59.29 seconds.
Also winning for the Panthers was the 200 medley relay team of Charlie Pletz, Raudenbush, Isaac Beltran DelRio and Andrew Strause (1:42.48).
Girls’ Swimming
The Schuylkill Valley High School girls’ swimming team fell to 4-1 in the league after losing to Wilson on Jan. 15, 119-66.
Winning individual events for the Lady Panthers were: Emily Johns, diving (178.50); and Maddie McDevitt, 100 breast (1:13.16).
Boys’ Bowling
The Schuylkill Valley High School boys’ bowling team improved top 18-6 in the Berks League and 21-6 overall after winning pair of league matches.
On Jan. 15, the Panthers topped Hamburg, 2-1. Ed Skorpinski led the way for Schuylkill Valley with a three-game series of 686. Tyler Dautrich bowled a 677 and Matt Keller bowled a 557.
On Jan. the Panthers also defeated Wyomissing, 2-1. Skorpinski led the way again with a series of 629. Keller bowled a 616 series and Dautrich a 592.
Girls’ Bowling
The Schuylkill Valley High School girls’ bowling team remained in first place in their division with a record of 22-2 after a pair of victories last week.
On Jan. 15, the Lady Panthers defeated Hamburg, 2-1. Schuylkill Valley was led by Jamie Wilson who bowled a three-game series of 643. Kristen Keller bowled a 585 series and Ashlin Long added a 533.
On Jan. 17, the Lady Panthers shutout Wyomissing, 3-0. Keller was the top bowler for Schuylkill Valley with a series of 727. Wilson bowled a 559 and Long a 513.
Tulpehocken
Boys’ Basketball
The Tulpehocken High School boys’ basketball team split a pair of games last week and are now 2-4 in the Berks League and 6-10 overall.
On Jan. 15, the Trojans played host to league opponent Wyomissing. The Spartans used a strong second half to defeat Tulpehocken, 71-41.
Wyomissing held a slim four-point halftime lead, but outscored the Trojans in the third quarter, 25-6, and the fourth, 17-10.
Bryan Mellen paced the Tulpehocken offense with 20 points in the game. Robert Edvall scored seven points, six of them coming off two three-point buckets. Noah Carles scored five and Dwayne Bryan scored four.
On Jan. 17, the Trojans were at home again, this time against Antietam. Thanks to a last second bucket by Clint Keeney, Tulpehocken was able to win the game, 44-42.
Antietam held a 23-16 halftime lead, but the Trojans came back in the third quarter, outscoring the Mounts, 18-10.
Mellen was the high scorer for Tulpehocken with 19 points in the contest. Carles contributed with 10 points and Ekvall netted nine.
Girls’ Basketball
The Tulpehocken High School girls’ basketball team improved to 3-3 in the Berks League and 8-8 overall after winning three games last week.
The began the week with a home game against Wyomissing. The game was close througout but it was Tulephocken that came out on top, 38-35.
Brooke Boyer paced the Tulpehocken offense with 12 points in the game. Taylor Boyer and Morgan Firestine each netted seven points and Hannah Zerbe scored five.
On Jan. 18, the Lady Trojans remained at home to take on Antietam. A big second half spurt helped Tulpehocken win the game, 48-27.
Tulpehocken held a slim 22-20 halftime lead, but outscored the Mounts in the third quarter, 10-4, and the fourth quarter, 16-3.
Taylor Boyer was the high scorer for the Lady Trojans with 11 points in the game. Zerbe scored nine points while Firestine and Jamie Fisher each netted eight points.
On Jan. 19, Tulpehocken was at home to take on non-league opponent Pottsgrove. The Lady Trojans outscored Pottsgrove in all four quarters and won the game, 57-47.
The locals led after one quarter, 12-7, then upped the lead to six by halftime, 25-19. The Trojans outscored the Falcons in the third quarter, 12-9, and the fourth, 20-19.
Darian Gordon scored 17 points in the game to lead the Lady Trojans. Taylor Boyer was right behind her with 16 points while Brooke Boyer and Firestine each scored eight points.
Wrestling
The Tulpehocken High School wrestling team rell to 0-6 in the Berks League and 0-18 overall after being swept in a tri-meet on Jan. 16, losing to Hamburg (77-3) and Kutztown (58-9).
Cody Miller (170) gave Tulpehocken its only three points against Hamburg when he won a 10-3 decision.
Miller also got six of the Trojans’ nine points against Kuztown when he pinned his opponent in 1:04. The other three points came from Jonah Fritz (160) won won a 13-12 decision.
