Pastor Philip K. Smith, a former resident of Berne and a Hamburg Area High School graduate (1970), received his Doctor of Ministry degree from The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia on May 18. The title of his D.Min Project is Gathering and Sending: Two Dynamics of Holy Communion in a Local Congregation. He is deeply grateful for the support of family, friends and parishioners during his course work and researching and writing his project.

Pastor Smith graduated Magna cum Laude from Muhlenberg College in 1974 and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 1979. He is currently serving Emmanuel - Mt. Zion Lutheran Parish in Nuremberg, about eight miles southwest of Hazleton.

Because of its size, the Class of 2012 gathered at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lansdale.
